You will never forget the day that you first brought your dog or cat home, since it felt like you had an instant bond. Since then, your relationship has deepened, and you can tell when something is wrong. When your dog or cat is sick, be aware of these warning signs that your favorite animal companion needs emergency attention.
This is one of the most terrifying symptoms that you can witness as a pet owner, yet labored breathing often begins slowly enough that you still have time. Take your pet to emergency services immediately if you notice shortness of breath, wheezing or anything else abnormal. If they completely stop breathing, perform pet CPR first.
There can be many underlying causes for a seizure that range from genetics to life-threatening conditions. Animals that have a first seizure should always be examined to determine the cause. You will also need to bring your pet in if they experience a cluster of more than one seizure, even if they were previously diagnosed.
Naturally, you can expect your pet to be a little tired after a long period of playtime. However, you should be concerned if they completely collapse without warning or fail to be able to get up. If these symptoms are combined with any of the others, it is especially concerning since this indicates an illness or injury has caused their lack of strength.
A single instance of vomiting or diarrhea can usually be handled at home with rest and dietary restrictions until you can see your vet. However, an animal who refuses to eat or who cannot keep water down is at risk for malnutrition and dehydration. After the second round of vomiting or diarrhea, go ahead and bring your pet in to make sure they stay hydrated
Your little fur ball may be just hacking up a hairball, but prolonged coughing indicates lung disease or contact with an allergen. Your pet could also be choking on something that they shouldn't have put in their mouth. When your pet's cough is abnormal, finding out why is important for preserving their health.
Certain animals are prone to spinal injuries, such as Dachshunds. However, any animal could experience this symptom if they fall from a height or are hit by a car. If your dog cannot move a limb, do your best to stabilize them and restrict movement while you contact your vet for after-hours care.
You can do your best to keep poisonous plants and chemicals away from your pet. However, that inquisitive nature or an errant houseguest can still lead to accidental poisoning. If you see your animal ingest a toxic substance or notice the signs of poisoning, such as refusing to eat or dizziness, it is time to call the vet.
Dogs and cats use a variety of methods to relay when something is wrong. For instance, your pet may scratch at their body, howl or whine when they are in severe pain. Cats can be especially stoic, but they may relocate to a private area of your home. A full exam performed right away is the only way to alleviate your pet's pain.
